Kentland Experimental Aerial Systems Laboratory
Founded in 2012, the Kentland Experimental Aerial Systems (KEAS) Laboratory provides facilities for research, instruction, and outreach involving unmanned aircraft system (UAS) flight dynamics and control. The KEAS Lab is located at Virginia Tech’s Kentland Farm agricultural research facility which includes about 1800 acres of university-owned farmland in a sparsely populated area 20 minutes southwest of the main campus. A 300 ft by 70 ft asphalt airstrip located at the center of the Kentland Farm is routinely used to support small UAS flight operations. The airfield includes a state-of-the-art weather station as well as two SODAR devices to log meteorological data. A wireless network covering the area provides direct internet access. The adjacent UAS hangar provides nearly 2000 sq ft of workspace, assignable to short-term projects. A variety of small fixed-wing and rotary-wing UAS platforms are available for use.Founded in 2012, the Kentland Experimental Aerial Systems (KEAS) Laboratory provides facilities for research, instruction, and outreach involving unmanned aircraft system (UAS) flight dynamics and control.
